THIS LONELY BOY REALLY NEEDS YOUR HELP! Thinking of adopting, but not sure? This beautiful boy is presently in paid boarding, and hoping someone might open their home to him short-term as a foster family! You can make a difference by (a) getting him out of the kennel and into an environment where he will know the love of a family or special person while he waits for his "forever home" (b) helping Northern Lights save rescue funds being spent on boarding (this will allow us to help other dogs) and (c) making space to save another "death row" shelter dog from being euthanized. If you are interested in hearing more, just EMAIL US and note "FOSTERING" in your subject line for an immediate response! And by the way, if you are an approved foster and happen to fall in love along the way, we will be happy to turn that foster contract into an ADOPTION contract for you :)

About BALTAR: Baltar is a 2-1/2 to 3 year old Alaskan Malamute who has lost his adoptive home because they believe him to be too submissive as a result of apparent past mistreatment. They describe him as a family for the PAST YEAR, when, right before Thanksgiving, we received an email asking for "guidance" with him. Because the "problem" causing his return is so incredible to us fabulous WITH children, but say it is difficult for children to have fun playing with him due to some of his post-abuse behavior. For instance, when approached to be petted he flops onto his back clawing the air, and reportedly the children have accidentally been scratched. They say he come a LONG way but is still so passive and submissive that it hinders training. They said "When we are able to devote the time that he requires, he learns very well and is very funny, however, as soon as "life" calls and we can't focus on him for a day or two, he reverts back to an "abused puppy". Again, he is trainable, as we have worked with him on many things ... he's crate-trained, housebroken and knows SIT, OF, LAY DOWN, DROP and STAYHe is VERY loveable, docile, and is just an all around BIG old baby and is really a valued family member.  We love Baltar so much and generally speaking he is WONDERFUL, he truly deserves much more than we can give him."

BALTAR IS CAT-FRIENDLY -- his family shared the following:  "He is also great with cats....We have two, a big male (Who was our first pet and ruled the house.) and small female and he was fine with both of them, I think cats have a bigger issue with him more than anything, as a matter of fact our big male cat would lay with him quite often and both would let him "sniff".

Their words speak for themselves in terms of what a wonderful dog Baltar is. It is not his fault he was "wonderful" only when they had adequate time for him. Many dogs who have been mistreated act out in very negative ways, and we know there is a family who will EMBRACE the sweetness and submissiveness that resulted from his apparent past abuse. Could it be you?

This dog's adoption donation is $225. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain! He has had a complete health exam, has already been neutered, is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.

What to do if you want to adopt this dog: To get started, just download the application by clicking on the link below or SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application! We will review your application to determine if there is a good match between your family and this dog. (Note: We may suggest another if we can offer a better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.)

NORTHERN LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to foster dogs in need of a second chance. For answers to FAQ regarding our philosophy, policies and practices, please VISIT OUR PETFINDER HOME PAGE.

NOTE: In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's history. We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective experience. Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our care is that of "full disclosure". It is our goal to ensure the adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between the dog and the adopting person or family. In some instances, because of applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of time. If we have identified a temperament or health condition while the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the issue or condition prior to adoption. Northern Lights' screening process is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be contractually responsible for doing so.
