My Story

update 11/9/09 Baby, a purebred schnauzer, is a calm, sweet, gentle soul. She is 3 years old and has all the wonderful qualities of a young but mature adult dog. She is quiet, well behaved, housetrained and doesn't chew. Baby was somewhat shy at first but clearly loves people and attention. She's been with us for two days and likes to be near us. Although she craves attention, she isn't pushy or demanding. But she is very, very friendly with stangers and hasn't met one that she doesn't nuzzle up to for a good scratch. She is content to snooze on the couch or in her crate but also loves to snuggle in your lap. At 20lbs, she's a great size for this. Although her energy level is low, she should go for walks. She likes to rest and eat so daily a walk is essential to keep her girlish figure. No slip leashes for her though, the tugging on her neck startles her - we've found that a good fitting collar works best. As mentioned, she has proven to be housetrained. She keeps a clean crate and does her business outside right away when she goes outside. She is 100% crate trained and has no problems being in there. She has been crated when we're out of the house and at night. She has shown little interest in the other dogs. She respects them in their home and has been submissive. When she's ready for a nap, she'll go to the recliner if the other dogs are with us. She doesn't approach their food bowls and is the first foster in our home that doesn't need to be crated while eating. She also shows no interest in the cats. She is people-oriented. However, she does frighten of loud noises, sudden movements or tugging on her collar so a home with adults or older children will be best for her. If you are looking for a laid-back, loveable companion, this is your girl.

Baby Cakes was rescued by our partner shelter in Arkansas from people who had too many dogs and did the right thing and gave Baby Cakes up. She is a purebred Snauzer and is good with other dogs, cats and kids. Baby Cakes has just been groomed and she is a sweet little girl.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $300 for dogs up to 6 months of age, $250 for dogs 7 months-5 years, and $200 for dogs 5 years and older. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip, and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas. All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption.
