Name: Athena Best Guess for Breed: Spaniel/Border Collie Best Guess for Age: 2 yrs as of July 2024 Gender: Female Approximate Weight: 34 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats or kids yet but she can be tested. Currently Living At: Lucky Dog's South Carolina shelter facility, Stop Over Station. Athena needs a foster or an adopter to secure her freedom ride to the DC area! Special Adoption Considerations: Athena is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. Athena is Looking For: Her forever home! Both spaniels and border collies are incredibly smart breeds, so you can expect the same from this girl. She'd be a quick learner for obedience or trick training. Ever consider giving agility a try? Athena would be a great partner (once she finishes her heartworm treatment exercise restriction) But most of all, Athena is looking for a loving family that will take her on long walks and bring her along on their adventures, before coming home to a warm lap and a soft bed at the end of the day.
