Update: Ashton is in Hollis, Maine in foster care and doing fabulously! He loves other dogs and will wrestle endlessly as they are gentle with him (he has a ball with my 25lb dog, but he is gentle with the little ones), he tolerates cats (barks at them, but leaves them when you tell him no), is a love bug, sleeps all night, behaves, is quiet most of the time, he is is less 'barky' than other Yorkies I have had here. He is super friendly when he knows you, he's a little nervous of new people at first, he just needs a couple friendly words from a new person, then he will come for love and play. Its like he needs to know what to expect...he's asking 'are you a good person, or a not good person'....then hes fine. He would make a great companion for a family with older kids (over 10). Youngsters and chaos probably would scare him a bit. Toddlers would not be appropriate for his size, neither would apartment dwellers either as Yorkies have a tendency to alarm bark.
His housetraining is a work in progress, but doing great for a puppy that has only been here for 2 days. He is about 11lbs now, so probably will be about 15 full grown. He's around 6 mos now, and loves to chew on toys, and likes Nylabones. He is pretty good about not chewing on things he isn't supposed to, but still needs redirected from time to time to more appropriate chew toys.
I would love to keep him, except that I have a houseful already. Yorkies have a life expectancy of 15-18 years, please be prepared for a very long companionship commitment.
Ashton was rescued by our partner shelter in Arkansas when they received a call from a woman saying "I paid 400$ for this dog and I cant keep him in my yard. Come get him before I kill him"
Ashton has been no problem in his foster home and plays with all the other dogs. He has made best friends with Freckles and they romp and play in the yard and are very good inside, sleeping in their crates without a peep. He is very sweet and friendly and loves car rides.
Because Ashton is small, weighing 11 pounds and is still a puppy at around 6 months old, he will not be adopted to familes with children under 10 or familes planning on having children.
All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending.
This dog is Urgent because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
