His foster mom says that Artie should do well in just about any home. He is playful, and loves his toys, along with everyone else's too! His foster family has worked on sharing and it is now a game to him! His foster mom also doesn't think cats would be a problem, because he is more toy oriented, so a dog-savvy kitty would probably be fine. Artie does love to play with other dogs and still hopes for a canine playmate.
Artie has learned to come when called. While this little guy is admittedly a bit funny to look at, his personality makes him adorable. Those eyes will melt your heart and for such a tiny dog, he has a lot of love to give!
Artie recently met his foster family's seven-month-old grandson. He just gave him a good lick on the face and ran off to play. He is just a great dog.
Update 2/26/09: Artie, a cute, 3-year-old, 13 pound chihuahua/pug mix, arrived in foster care this weekend and his foster mom has been getting to know him. He mayube small in stature, but he's big on personality.
Artie loves to cuddle on the couch, with either human or doggie friends. He'd love to find a forever home with a canine playmate who's similar in size. He seems to have a medium energy level and he'll need moderate exercise.
Artie comes when called, and understands no, but doesn't seem to have had any other obedience training. He is smart and teachable. In fact, he's already taught himself how to open one of the baby gates in his foster home. He slides it open with his little nose if his foster mom forgets to lock it. He's also mastered the doggie door, and he is house trained. He will go in his crate, but much prefers to sleep with a warm body.
Artie's foster mom recommends a home without VERY small children, as Artie does show some signs of his feisty Chihuahua breeding. He will, however, make a clever, entertaining and GREAT companion for a home with adults (he'd prefer someone who's home a lot) and/or slightly older kids.
Notes from our partner shelter: Artie is a sweet little dog that will be arriving in New Hampshire on 2/21/09.
(original name is Artemis, but Artemis was a girl)
History: Artie was an owner turn-in to the vet. The woman who owned him could no longer keep him, could not find anyone to take him, and had turned him in for euth. The vet called and turned him over to rescue.
Age: born in 05
Breed(s): chi mix - maybe with pug
Weight: 13 lbs (he is pretty hardy and tolerant, but due to small stature, kids under 5 yrs old not encouraged; but will be considered with previous small dog experience)
Energy Level: *Med: fine with a walk or two per day plus playtime
Affectionate: *Likes to cuddle; *Likes to sleep with people - if it's too cold he will crawl under the blankets; *Asks to be pet
People/General Playfulness: *Occasionally
Socialization: *Socialized: not fearful of new situations
House Behavior: - working on house training. He currently likes to mark in the house, but is real good about going when I take him out; and the marking shouldn’t be an issue as much after he is neutered.
Crate trained - he is not overly fond of the crate (or even being locked up and away from the action. Obviously he isn’t used to it as he much happier on the bed with me)
Obedience: *Has none, but minds well when corrected; *Ok on leash
Behavior with other dogs: still has a little "male" behavior in him, but corrects easily and I have not had any problems with him around the other dogs: he will also play if approached
Children exposure: Ages of children and amount/type of exposure:___14,12,6_____________________ Reaction to children: *No fear/approaches for attention
Dominance/Submissiveness: I have not seen any overly dominant behavior (tries but doesn't push it; quickly learns his place in the pack) - does not seem submissive, but not aggressive either.
Reactions to strangers: *Friendly: wags, generally happy for the attention
Cat test: Distance from cat: _____in same yard_______ *Outside environment *Noticed cat: then ignored completely *Noticed cat: sniffed but uninterested
Describe the dog in one good word or sentence encompassing the entire dog: Artie comes across as a "tough" fellow at first - I wasn't sure what to make of him originally. But he is sweet as can be and is really just a big love bug. He loves to sleep right next to me and loves to be petted. Usually he is right under me when I am trying to type on the computer - definitely a people dog.
From the dogs perspective: My perfect home would be: with lots of love and attention; I want to be next to you a lot and I want to be able to sleep with you too.
