My Story

IF THIS LISTING IS STILL UP, the pet is still available for adoption! Inquiries asking about availability will not be answered. E-mails or contact forms that are submitted prior to completing an adoption application will not be answered. ***Please read this first, as it answers the majority of questions we receive*** Please do not contact us about specific dogs until you have completed our Adoption Application FIRST --- located at www.aussierescue.org Once we receive your application, we will contact you. This chapter receives only applications from applicants living in Texas and Oklahoma. If you live outside of TX or OK, you will need to contact our organizations Management Team first: [email protected]. Out-of-state adoptions are considered on a case-by-case basis. Our organization requires prospective adopters to complete an approval process prior to meeting with dogs in our program. This includes: *Completion of Adoption Application *Veterinarian Check *Reference Checks (non-relatives) *Home Visit Our ultimate goal is to screen and counsel potential homes to the best of our ability in an effort to find the most perfect match and fit for their lifestyle. Please keep in mind that color and appearance of the available dog is last on our priority list, and will have no bearing on adoption placement decisions. Please refrain from contacting members of our organization or asking about specific dogs/potential matches until after your screening process has been completed and approved. ***$300 Adoption Fee*** -------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT ONYX: Rep: Laura Kempf / [email protected] Onyx is located in North Richland Hills, TX and it is required that you travel there to meet him in person within 10 days of application approval if you want to adopt (exceptions can be made for out-of-state applicants). We do need the entire party to be involved when meeting available dogs, including every family member and dog(s) that currently live in your home. Onyx is a 2.5yo, 40lb, fully-vetted, fully house-trained and crate-trained male Australian Shepherd. He was surrendered to our rescue organization after he was purchased as a gift for someone that did not want a dog (this is why it's important not to "gift" animals!) Onyx can be very shy and timid at first, but really blossoms once he is settled in his new home. He absolutely loves other dogs; if he without a canine counterpart, he can be very skittish... so we are requiring another established dog in the home to show him the ropes! Onyx really likes to play with toys and especially loves chew toys! He is still finishing up his chewing stage, so he needs tough, durable toys (like Kong products). Onyx's ideal family also includes a person that works from home or is retired, as he does exhibit separation anxiety during his initial transition phase. This is manifested through barking in the crate when people are away from the home, which is why he would benefit from someone who is home more than not. Once he is more adjusted in his new family (ie: after a few months), his anxiety when alone dissipates. Onyx was initially very fearful of riding in the car, but he is getting better and now even "loads up" by jumping into the crate on his own. He is fearful of thunder and sticks close to you when storms are rolling through. He is good at alerting when people knock on the door, but stops barking after a few seconds. He would also do best with a mobile vet or groomer that comes to the house, as he is absolutely terrified of going to the vet hospital. Onyx will thrive in a home environment that is consistent and keeps his world relatively small. He is not an ideal candidate for "dog-friendly restaurant patios" etc. His personality really blossoms within the safety of his home, yard, and neighborhood.
