My Story

Almond Joy (AJ) will be available for adoption as soon as she is spayed. She is a 2 year old Australian Shepherd mix girl that weighs 42 pounds. Please read her amazing story! Almond Joy needs a patient and kind hero who knows that "love returned" is worth waiting for. Short version: AJ was pulled from a high kill shelter and escaped the fence at our shelter several days later. Search and efforts to trap her were unsuccessful and she was eventually deemed to be uncatchable. AJ settled into a community where she was fed literally just down the street from the shelter and was able to be trapped 10 months later with chicken and the amazing efforts of her feeder, shelter volunteer, and McKamey. At that time, AJ was found to be VERY pregnant. She went to a foster home where she escaped again a few days later. AFortunately, AJ was caught again by another animal lover trying to save some feral cats the night of the blizzard. She then returned to her foster home and delivered 4 healthy puppies the very next night! (Yeah, we could hardly believe it either:) AJ and puppies remained in foster for 5 weeks and then went to the shelter for vaccines and to get ready for adoptions. Puppies will go quick. In fact, one is already in "foster to adopt" with the person who saved them all from freezing in a blizzard with 10 degree temps. There is no sugar coating her bio. A.J. is hand shy and a flight risk, although she has made SO MUCH progress in foster care and with the kindness of shelter staff. A.J. is very smart, brilliant you could say. She will be trainable and is already housetrained. A.J. is a gorgeous (albeit aloof) girl as the result of her contributing breeds: Husky/Aussie/Border Collie. All these breeds are WORKING DOGS. She will require a fence, an air tag and/or a tracker, and outdoor supervision/leash/harness. An active adopter is a must. She needs exercise, enrichment, and a job would be nice. Almond Joy is going to be an awesome pet but it will take some time getting there. She is looking for the love of her life and we are 100% determined to help make that connection. Her story really should be on the big screen. We're open Wednesday - Sunday 12 - 5 p.m but are doing meet & greets and adoptions by appointment only. The adoption fee is $135 which includes a free veterinary exam within 2 weeks of adoption at local participating vets, up to date vaccinations, heartworm test, heartworm preventative, dewormer, flea preventative, microchip, & spay or neuter.
