My Story

Meet Akira! 12-year-old Akira was entrusted to our care through the Final Wish Program on March 24th. Sadly, Akira's owner was moved to a care facility after it was discovered that she wasn't taking care of herself or her dog. Akira is incredibly sweet and gives the gentlest "thank you" kisses. She is one of our "lobbyists", what we call the group of Frosted Faces who live in the cushy confines of our lobby. They must get along great with other dogs, and they have the special job of greeting everyone who visits FFF. They typically have a health condition that makes living in the lobby with big comfy beds more comfortable for them, and for Akira, it's that she does not have use of her back legs. Please don't let that scare you away from considering her as your new family member! Akira is one of the easiest paralyzed dogs we've had the privilege of caring for, and we have cared for many. She can control her pee & poop (which is very unusual for a paralyzed dog), plays (yes, plays!) in the yard with other dogs, and is strong enough to go on real walks! In fact, as you can see in the video, Akira cruised all over the Las Vegas strip while on a weekend trip with the founders of FFF! Worried about it being difficult to get Akira into her wheels? Check out the video, and you'll see it's easy peasy and very quick. We cannot say enough wonderful things about Akira. As far as we can tell, her only tiny fault is that she is not good with cats. Lovely Akira just left on a two-week Frosted Fling, and we are so excited for her to spend time in a home again. Her Fling Mom reports: "As Akira settles into a home routine we're learning more and more about this sweet, gentle, silly girl. She is by far one of the easiest dogs I've ever fostered. She doesn't make a peep....not a single bark, growl, or even the tiniest whine. She's not phased by fireworks, the mailman, deliveries, strangers, or grumpy dogs. She eats well, sleeps through the night, and is potty trained. She loves to cuddle and be close but is totally fine hanging on her own too. Akira is a dream! Things Akira Likes.... * Naps! This girl naps like a boss. She likes to switch beds between naps and especially loves sprawling out and hanging her head off the edge. She's happy to nap alone, nestled in your lap, or next to another dog. * Playing! Akira is silly and will often look at you and roll over on her back chomping at the air to say, "hey, come play with me." She seems medium on toys....will play with them for a bit, but not overly interested. * Nature! Akira LOVES to explore areas with grass, trees, and bushes. She'll stick her whole head in a bush and happily stay there taking in all the glorious smells. And we absolutely have to stop on walks to sniff every grass patch. * Food! Akira is a foodie. She's a great eater and not picky at all. There is not a single thing she has turned her nose to since she's been here. After breakfast and dinner she makes sure to lick both dog bowls clean. She also checks in on her food bowl whenever she's in her wheelchair and is utterly dissapointed if it's empty. * Men! This one was kind of surprising and I'm not totally sure what it is but since the minute she set foot inside of our house she's wanted to be close to my husband. She watches his every move and will choose the bed next to his office desk if he's working every time. When my adult son came by for a visit she immediately gravitated to him too. She was super playful with him, rolling around on her back and mouthing his arms ever so gently which I havent seen her do with anyone else. She was also very interested in the men she saw when I took her to work. I don't know how to describe it, but she kind of lights up. * Beach! Akira loves water! She ran right into the waves and happily enjoyed water that went all the way up to her back. She had no problem using her wheelchair to walk from the car to the beach and back and took several strolls up and down the beach with just one break for snacks and water on a blanket in between. * Kids! At the beach, she gladly accepted LOTS of pets and approaches from toddlers to teenagers and loved them all equally. She was unphased by toys, kites, boogie boards, running, and loud screams. Girl is bomb proof! Things Akira doesn't like... We haven't found anything yet! Akira is thriving in a home environment. I can't say it enough...Akira is a DREAM. Could you be the one to make HER dreams come true with a place to call home?" Check back soon for the full report on Akira's Fling!
