My Story

Akira is one of OPIN's LAP (Loved Again Program) dogs. Meaning, OPIN is helping Akira's guardian find her a new home. OPIN will review and approve applicants and when the right match comes along, we will connect potential adopters to Akira's owner where you can meet her in her home surroundings. Akira is located in Stamford, CT. Akira is a 5 year old Siberian Husky, who sadly must be given up due to family separation. Akira has grown up with a family that includes two children, current ages 12 and 6. She is very playful with children matching their energy levels. Akira does well with other dogs on walks and in dog parks, often smaller dogs will try and bark at her but Akira is never the aggressor. She has never shown aggression towards people and is not food aggressive. Akira is not considered a barker and rarely does so at dogs or critters while on walks. She usually barks when she needs to go out or when she is thirsty. Her intelligence level helps in this regard. Akira enjoys tough toys like kongs and rope tug of war, she has a variety of chew toys as well but she goes bonkers for frozen peanut butter treats of any type, either inside of a toy or just as a treat out of the freezer where her peanut butter balls are kept for treat time. Akira swam as a puppy when she lived near a lake, loves car rides and is very calm in the car. She’s had no upset stomachs when riding. She traveled 8 hours from the breeder in Ohio, only having to stop once to relieve herself; she is Road Trip certified (-: She is used to having a fenced in backyard to run around in. Despite this, she craves walks and typically relieves herself during walks and not in the backyard. She does best with 2-3 walks a day, of at least .5 to 1 mile a piece. Akira is house trained and has never been crate trained, she was very fast to learn how to signal she needs a walk as she will stand near the door and look at you. She is on a routine with walks and going out but with time constraints having a backyard for the morning relief will help if a morning walk is not possible. Evening walks however are a necessity or she will typically pace all night until taken out. At bedtime, Akira uses an old couch Ottoman to sleep on most nights. She has tried many different dog beds but she never took to anything that didn’t resemble an Ottoman. Akira is not allowed on other furniture in the household, including beds, mainly because of the shedding. She would love nothing more than to cuddle up on a couch or bed, assuming regular brushing is possible to minimize shedding. Akira would make a wonderful family pet. To be approved to meet Akira, please fill out OPIN's online application here: www.opinpets.org/adopt NOTE: OPIN offers free weekly dog training in Stamford, CT. So ideally, if you are chosen and take Akira home, we suggest you attend our free dog training where you can get expert advise for our dog behaviorist and come to bond with Akira.
