My Story

Ailyn is a sweet 2-year-old, ~60 pound, pittie mix with amazing joie de vivre. Ailyn was rescued by FORA in February of 2023 when she was pulled from the Roswell shelter pregnant and in labor. She needed an emergency c-section and subsequently her 9 puppies died - probably because she was so malnourished. Ailyn has healed physically, gotten to a healthy weight, and is spayed. She loves to go on walks and do zoomies outside and inside (she's zooming inside much less than she was even a few months ago). Ailyn loves people and dogs and shows no aggression, reactivity, or resource guarding, but at the same time she doesn't always pay attention to boundaries and/or warning growls. She lives with 2 dogs about her size, but several years older, who find her a little too puppyish at times. Most of the time they get along great. She would do well with a dog buddy who can match her energy level. Ailyn loves chewing on bones and toys, including kongs with frozen dog food. She also likes to go through the recycling bin and pull out interesting (i.e good smelling) containers to chew on. Ailyn has idiopathic epilepsy and is being seen by a neurologist in Albuquerque. She is on medication (Keppra, Zonisamide, and Phenobarbital) for the seizures which have significantly decreased the frequency of her seizures since she switched to these meds on Nov 5th. Ailyn easily takes her pills with a pill pocket or nestled in a spoonful of pate (she likes Luvsome but not Little Cesar). We also switched to vinegar to clean our floors and removed a few potentially toxic plants from her diet/access. Ailyn has isolation anxiety, crate anxiety and a little motion sickness. During the time we've fostered her she has gotten pretty comfortable in the car and just drools a little. We've found that Ailyn does well in boarding so we think she just needs to know a person or animal is nearby. We've been able to leave her in our house with our dogs in another room for several hours at a time. We have not worked on crate training because of the risk that she would have a seizure in the crate and hurt herself. Ailyn is housetrained but has had some incontinence that is currently managed with Incurin (estrogen). Ailyn likes to be outside and might be okay left in a yard but we haven't been able to test that and she does well at a boarding facility when we travel. We love Ailyn and are hoping to find her a permanent home. Ailyn could be adopted by someone who is primarily at home or someone who could take her to work or doggy day care. Ailyn is in a foster home in Santa Fe, NM and transport can be arranged.
