Shakira left the Prince Georges County shelter as a puppy. She returned as a three-year-old dog, whose owners had a new baby and no longer had the time or money to care for her. But it appears that had been the situation for a while; when she was brought back to the shelter, Shakira weighed barely half of what she should have weighed and her ribs, backbone and hips were sticking out!

Shakira is delighted to be in her foster home, where she can snuggle up to people, romp with other dogs and get lots of high-calorie food to put that weight back on. The situation that brought her back to the shelter hasn't affected her outlook on life. She's a sweet, playful girl who does everything with gusto, whether it's trying to meld with you in order to be close enough to be petted or flying around the yard with gazelle-like leaps. She loves to play fetch, and has almost figured out that if she drops the ball, you can throw it for her again. Otherwise, she just runs around with it in her mouth. She also likes tug toys and bones.

Shakira has had some obedience training, and knows some commands, and is trying to learn more. Once she gets the hang of loose-leash walking, she'll be a great jogging companion!

She sleeps comfortably in her crate at night, although she'd rather be sleeping with you. She's hoping for a new family that will be hers for a lifetime.
