My Story

SOOKIE IS NOT AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY SHELTER. THIS IS A COURTESY POSTING FOR A FELLOW RESCUER. DO NOT CALL THE SHELTER AS THEY HAVE NO INFO ON SOOKIE. SEE CONTACT INFORMATION BELOW.

Sookie and her 6-week old gray tiger stripe kitten were picked up by a southern Ohio Dog Warden 7/28/08 and were awaiting DEATH BY INJECTION when their foster mom spotted them. (Ohio Animal Control municipalities contract with various veterinary hospitals to kill all the stray felines picked up since Ohio law classifies them as "nuisance wildlife." When the owner is known, the Dog Warden allows a 3-day grace period for the owner to pay a fine and claim their cat. Otherwise, the vet clinic is allowed to kill the cat the day of drop off.)

It is SAD to think what would have happened to Sookie and her kitten if their foster mom had not intervened on their behalf 7/28/08. It is SAD to conjecture what probably happened to Sookie's other kittens. And it is SAD to think that anyone would let such a sweet cat run around and be subjected to multiple pregnancies and the very contagious and incurable feline diseases: Feline Leukemia and/or FIV. Fortunately, Sookie tested negative for both of these diseases, which meant that her kitten was also free of these deadly diseases.

When Sookie and her kitten were rescued on 7/28/08, there was a large gray tiger striped fellow on IV fluids in the next kennel room who died a day later of complications from blockage. A caring veterinary assistant told the mourning family about the kitten who had been saved from death-by-humans the day before, and they decided to adopt him the following week.

A lot of people say that Tortishell cats have some Siamese heritage. Sookie's SWEET, SWEET personality would certainly make one believe that. Sookie loves people and takes every lap as an INVITATION for togetherness. Sookie's best friend (MOST of the time) is another resident foster cat named Oscar. For some reason, all of the resident cats LOVE to HATE Oscar. But, MOST of the time, Sookie is willing to play patty-cake and roll around the carpet tightly clinched in a bear hug with Oscar. Sookie likes to play "high five" and "patty cake" sooo much that she does it with her foster mom and other human and feline friends every chance she gets. She also likes the sound of her name and is happy that her foster mom didn't spell it "Suki" since she wasn't "made in Japan."

On 7/28/08, Sookie was estimated at 1 year of age and weighed 8.3 lbs. Within 2 weeks, she was fully vetted and is now awaiting her own wonderful home.
