My Story

PK is an adorable 7-year-old, white and black, short-haired cat who was found more than 4 years ago in a feral cat colony and trapped by one of our partner animal rescue organizations here in Maine. She transferred to HART and moved into one of our experienced foster homes so she could decompress and get used to being around people. As it turned out, this took quite a while, because PK proved to be a rather independent and strong-willed kitty who could be rather aggressive when she feels unsure or threatened. Her foster home just adored her but eventually knew that she needed to have more visibility to potential adopters, so after seeing great forward progress and success, PK came into the shelter. She is blossoming even more at HART. She adores laying in the sun, likes to play and loves attention. PK has befriended many volunteers who she enjoys spending quality time with, and they in turn love her! Before she came to the shelter, her foster family patiently worked with her to earn her trust and improve her confidence and people-skills. Patience, consistent routine, and smart use of food motivation allowed PK to make great progress, and she has become quite comfortable with humans. She is very accepting of pets, scritches, and the occasional gentle belly rub. She would sometimes even sleep on a pillow next to her foster mom at night. The biggest change in her is that she now purrs! When she is feeling really happy, she will chirp and chatter in such a cute way. PK is also very playful, and she simply loves interactive playtime--you should see how she picks up toys and walks around with them! Of course, PK still does have her limits, but the good news is that she gives clear cues when she's at or near her threshold so you know to back off and can avoid getting swatted. While she was in foster care, we discovered that PK has a renal (kidney) condition that requires 2 medications and regular monitoring. She takes her medications like a champ and eats a prescription dry food and Fancy Feast canned food. For more information about PK's condition and her specific health needs, please contact our Medical Manager, Bobbi-Jo, directly via email at [email protected]. She will need a calm home with a patient, cat-savvy person or couple who will give her time to acclimate to her new environment and continue to work with her on socialization while also allowing her to be herself. PK should not be in a home where children live or visit, and she would probably do best as the only animal in the household. If you would like to meet this wonderful cat, please complete an online adoption application, specifying PK, and a member of our Adoption Team will reach out to you to schedule a time for a meet-and-greet.
