OSCAR IS NOT AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY SHELTER. THIS IS A COURTESY POSTING FOR A FELLOW RESCUER. DO NOT CALL THE SHELTER AS THEY HAVE NO INFO ON OSCAR. SEE CONTACT INFORMATION BELOW.
Oscar was rescued 7/28/08 at approximately 3 years of age from a southern Ohio veterinary clinic where the local Dog Warden had left him to be euthanized after "3 days to enable the owner to claim him." (Ohio Animal Control municipalities contract with various veterinary hospitals to kill all the stray felines picked up since Ohio law classifies them as "nuisance wildlife." When the owner is known, the Dog Warden allows a 3-day grace period for the owner to pay a fine and claim their cat. Otherwise, the vet clinic is allowed to kill the cat the day of drop off.)
Upon spotting this friendly boy in a cage in the veterinary hospital innocently AWAITING HIS FATAL INJECTION, his now-foster-mom requested he be released to her at the end of the 3 days if unclaimed. Upon release to her, his foster mom gave him a name and began veterinary protocols to ensure good health in preparation for adoption to a good home. The first procedure was to test Oscar for Feline Leukemia and FIV to ensure that he was negative for these highly contagious feline diseases so frequently contracted by "outdoor" cats. Oscar, who weighed 10 lbs. and had previously been neutered, was then vaccinated. Now, all he needed was a permanent GUARDIAN (someone who would protect him from the potential for disease, injury, and/or death inherent in being relegated to the great outdoors).
Oscar's gorgeous pale green eyes are perfectly showcased by his beautiful white coat. In addition to his beautifully marked face, Oscar's jet black markings on his snow-white coat include a solid black tail and black down the backs of his rear legs, looking almost as if someone painted them. All in all, you could say that Oscar is TOO PRETTY, TOO SWEET, and TOO GENTLE to be a boy...but, then, males in the feline world are often the most lovable.
Oscar likes living in the house with his foster mom, many dogs, and other cats. Oscar is such a friendly boy with EVERYBODY that it is a miracle he was not ripped to shreds by unfriendly outside cats and dogs while freely roaming the great outdoors. When passing along side of any of the many cat-friendly dogs in his foster home, Oscar "freezes" in situ to allow them to sniff him to ensure them that he is no threat. He will even sniff cat-savvy dogs nose to nose in curiosity and friendship.
Oscar kneads alot, especially when he's trying to become friends with another one of the cats in his foster home. Unfortunately, the dogs in his foster home have been a lot more receptive to Oscar's friendly gestures than the feline inmates. The other cats have tried "hissing" him to death. But he NEVER gives up trying to approach them in friendship and NEVER retaliates. Only two cats have relented in threatening his well being. An orange long-hair named Corky has started letting Oscar lounge and catnap on the same comforter--even overlapping arms and legs at times--but hasn't otherwise accepted Oscar for "socializing" or dining together. Sookie, a domestic short-hair tortoiseshell, has provided Oscar with his only opportunities for feline socializing--probably because Sookie likes to play patty cake with ANYONE who will participate.
Oscar's indoor recreation includes playing with a dog bone, rolling a cat ball with bell inside, crawling underneath a throw rug, and playing with a closet door--making it "rattle" back and forth by putting his paw underneath it. His indoor creature comforts include sleeping at the foot of his foster mom's bed and taking lazy "catnaps" with his paws covering his eyes. And, of course, as with any loving cat, Oscar loves to rub him self against his foster mom's legs.
