When he first arrives home, it'll be best to confine him to a bathroom with his litterbox, food, water, toys, and bed nearby, allowing him to open up at his own pace. Before expanding his roaming territory, look for signs that he's comfortable: he's using his litterbox, soliciting attention from you, and eating normally.
