My Story

JOLLY HOLLY is such an affectionate cat when she gets to know you. She's such a lover of people that when you stroke her fur, she tends to drool with utter happiness. She will often let you know when it's time for some love by head butting your leg just to let you know she's there for you. This lovely lady is also a very nice conversationalist. When you talk to her, she will respond back with soft kitty meows.

Jolly Holly is characterized as a Tortie. Did you know that ...

  • A tortoiseshell is a cat whose coloring is a flecked mixture of either black and red (sometimes with bits of white), or blue and cream (diluted black and red).
  • The difference between a tortie and a calico is the pattern; torties have small flecks of colors mixed together, while calicos have large blocks and usually a large amount of white.
  • Torties are almost always female. This is because the genes for color reside on the X chromosome, so for a cat to have multiple colors (i.e., black and orange), they must have two X chromosomes, therefore making them female. The few male torties are technically genetically defective and are sterile.
  • Tortoiseshell is not a breed; it is a coloring. There are torties of virtually every breed of cat, both long- and short-haired.
  • Torties almost always have copper or yellow eyes.
  • Tortie Folklore...

  • The Celts believed that a tortoiseshell cat was good luck in a home.
  • The English believed that torties could remove warts if you rubbed their tail on the wart during the month of May.
  • In Scotland and Ireland, a stray tortoiseshell cat settling in one's home is a good omen.
  • To dream of a tortoiseshell cat means luck in love.
  • Edgar Allen Poe was devoted to his tortoiseshell Catarina. She inspired his story "The Black Cat". She sat with his wife during her illness and frequently sat on his shoulder when he wrote.
  • How can you resist a cat with so much history? Jolly Holly needs a place to call home, can that home be yours?

** Please note: All kittens must be altered before they can go home with their new family. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Kittens are generally altered between 10 and 11 weeks of age because we have a surgery minimum weight requirement of 2.25 lbs. If you are doing a pre-adopt (adopting a kitten before alter surgery) please inquire about the kitten's current weight. Kittens gain about 1/4 of a lb per week and you can estimate alter date from there. Remember this is just an estimate. Thank you for understanding that these policies are based on ensuring the best possible start for our kittens.
