My Story

Written by the student who saved him!A year or two after quarantine ended and students returned to school a black kittennamed Gato appeared on Legacy High Schoo's campus. He was not the first cat to show up buthe was the first to stay. Some Legacy teachers suspect he was sired by a street cat in the schooland decided to stay where he received constant attention from students and snagged their lunch. No one knows exactly when Gato first appeared only that he showed up one day with nointention of leaving. Ever since Gato arrived at our school he was spotted every morningwithout fail - sitting near one of the school buildings meowing at people walking past him. Thefirst time Gato approached me my heart broke. He was a small affectionate thing who wouldn'tstop meowing and I felt terrible for not having any food to feed him. He was covered in fleasand kept trying to rub himself against my legs and my hands. I wished I could help him andfortunately I eventually did. In my senior year of high school I learned one of my teachers hadtaken the responsibility of feeding Gato daily and I decided to handle this for her. However hisfood would get stolen by other cats and skunks leading him to eat highly processed food thatwould upset his stomach. Around the same time I created my service project on cat welfare:Project F.U.R. (Feline Urgent Rescue). As a cat lover and owner I wanted my project to beimpactful and help at least one feline in need and Gato was in hand's reach. Despite everyone'slove for Gato I knew he deserved a better life. After establishing Project F.U.R. with twoclassmates we contacted cat welfare organizations. We first received food donations from TheLittle Lion Foundation and eventually communicated with FixNation who helped us trap Gato.He was transported to their clinic where he received medical attention and was neutered!Though Gato will be dearly missed at Legacy we are happy to know Gato is on his way to betterplaces. He is a friendly affectionate and talkative kitty ready to find his furever home!
