My Story

Flanders is a large, handsome blue-eyed male who was trapped with two other cats. He initially came into the shelter scared and unfriendly, but that slowly changed. After a trip to the vets, we were told that he had a damaged right eye and may lack vision in it, and that he, along with one of the other cats was FIV +. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus cannot be transmitted to humans or dogs, but can be spread to other cats, primarily through bites. An FIV + cat can enjoy life for years after the diagnosis if kept indoors and on a healthy diet in a non-stressful environment. Additionally, Flanders was just diagnosed with diabetes, but luckily it is very easy to give him his two insulin shots a day. We just do it while he is eating, and he doesn't even notice. Once Flanders was settled into a comfortable room with his companion cats, he began to relax and our volunteers could start making progress with socializing him. As with most stray cats, he is food motivated which always aids in the socializing process. He can now be petted and brushed, and he will head-butt you when he wants more attention. He meets the volunteers at the door and eagerly seeks out attention and affection. He's still a little shy when strangers arrive, but he warms up quickly to gentle visitors. Flanders will be happiest in a quiet home where he gets attention and affection on his terms with a person or family (no young children) who show patience and understanding. He likes his independence, but once trust is established, we are confident that he will be a welcome companion to the right adopter. He even lets some of the volunteers pick him up. If you are interested in meeting Flanders, please go to our website and fill out an adoption application and we will be in touch to make an appointment for your visit. Filling out an application is not a commitment to adopt. https://www.safehavenhumanesociety.org/adoption-form/
