Essence

Meet Essence, aka Essie! Essence is a very special girl. As you can tell from her pictures, Essie does not have eyes. When she came to us, both eyes had already ruptured and had to be removed when she was strong enough for the surgery. As a result, Essence is completely blind. However, she doesn't let this slow her down a whit. When Essie was at the adoption center, she lived in a multi-story kennel, and got up and down without any trouble at all. In her foster home, she quickly acclimated to her special room, sniffing out every inch until she knew the layout. Once she was allowed out in the rest of the house, she totally took it over. Stairs, cat trees, furniture - there's nothing she can't climb if she sets her mind to it. Sometimes she needs some help getting down, which she will announce with a polite little meow, but this doesn't happen too often. Essie uses her litterbox just fine, and even tries to cover her messes, though she isn't always successful. She is also a very careful groomer, and keeps herself super clean. Essie even plays with toys like any other cat - she just has to listen for them instead of watching where she swats them. She ADORES crinkly balls and toys with bells. She also loves strings and feathers, and especially loves stuffed animals to use as chew toys. Essie is a professional at digging out toys from under furniture or hidden spots that other cats would miss. She likes to carry them around to show off her prizes. The one thing Essie struggles with when it comes to her blindness is that she can panic if startled (if something touches her or comes too close and she isn't expecting it). When this happens, her fosters find she will swipe or bite if touched, but she calms down when they speak to her and reassure her she is safe. For this reason, she would prefer calmer, gentler playmates who won't sneak up or pounce on her. Essence can entertain herself if left alone, but she is a super social girl. If she had it her way, she would always be in someone's arms. As soon as she hears the door to her kennel opening, she lights up and starts pawing at us so we'll pick her up. She loves being carted around, and will rub all over our faces and necks. Sometimes if we're not giving her enough attention, she'll give us little nips to spur us along. In her foster home, the moment one of her fosters lays down on the couch, she is THERE, ready and waiting for cuddles and kisses. She is an incredibly affectionate kitty with so much love to give. Because she can't see her food, Essie finds it easier to sniff out wet food, especially fish flavors. When she hears a can crack open, she'll lift her nose in the air and sniff sniff sniff until we put it down near her. This girl is definitely not shy about letting us know what she wants. Essence does have an issue with being overly mouthy or biting (hands, but she'll also nip at the occasional ankle) so we would not recommend her for a home with children (teenagers should be fine if they are gentle). She would prefer to be in a home without other animals. If there are cats in the home, they will need to be low-energy and gentle, so they don't sneak up on her and spook her. Essence is estimated to be 1.5 years old as of December 2023. She has been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. With an approved application, her adoption fee is $37.10.
