My Story

Sweet little Darwin was found lying in a yard beaten up, bleeding and covered in fleas. We don’t know what he had been through before two girls found him lying there pleading for help from someone. They contacted PetPromise and we knew we had to help this sweet soul….even having been through whatever he had been through he purred when people came to help Him and he even head butted them to say thank you. He went to the vet and was treated and neutered and we found out what we didn’t want to hear. This sweet boy had FIV. While FIV is certainly not a death sentence (FIV kitties can live happy long lives, just like people with AIDs) if cared for properly. (All he needs to stay in tip top shape are these things: indoor only home, vet visits at least 2X a year and more if he has a cold, daily lysine powder in his food. That's it! The powder is cheap and can be ordered from Amazon or Chewy. ) So the sad thing about his FIV status is that this sweet friendly super love bug of a boy may never get “picked” to be adopted because of his FIV+ status. People don’t understand that these babies can love and deserve a good happy life in a home where someone will love them even though they aren’t perfect. New studies have shown that FIV+ and FIV neg cats can live together as long as the cats are neutered and no fighting is happening, as the new science suggests that the chance of transmission is relatively low. See https://www.humanesociety.org/news/fiv-positive-cats for more information. Further information on FIV in cats: https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-immunodeficiency-virus-fiv However, it would be great if Darwin were in a home without other cats (as they can share colds and viruses that do not affect them at all but which could be dangerous to Darwin because his immune system is compromised. But no matter what…this boy just wants a home where he can cuddle (he loves loves loves people and is the friendliest boy.). We wish that people would give him a chance.
