Darcia showed up in a backyard feeding station in the dead of winter. The feeder saw her and thought she was a kitten, but was able to approach her and bring her in. Darcia was lucky to get out of the cold. She was only 4 lbs, a sweet little cat. When she was brought to the vet, they discovered she was microchipped. She was not a kitten but a senior cat over 10 years old. How could a little cat like this wind up outside freezing and starving?
Darcia was obviously comfortable when finally indoors, but was always hungry; there was something amiss. When blood work was done, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), hence the constant need to eat. She was immediately put on medication. Darcia is easy to medicate – the medication is formulated as a cream which is wiped on her ear flap twice a day. After a few months of treatment, blood work showed that she responded well and her thyroid level has stabilized to a normal level, and she had put on a couple of pounds!
Darcia is a sweet and beautiful little girl with a lot of good years ahead of her. She is very active and can still jump quite high. When you pick her up, she is so light and soft just like a kitten. In spite of her diminutive size, she will stand her ground against other, bigger resident cats. Her favourite sleeping spot is on or in the cubby section of a cat tree. She enjoys the company of the other cats but is also independent.
Darcia is a senior kitty who prefers a quiet environment, the company of another cat and a family who will treat her with loving care. It’s best not to speculate on the circumstances that led to her abandonment, but to focus on making sure Darcia will live now a life replete with kindness and light. She deserves the best life from now on, and hopes to fit herself into her forever family soon.
