My Story

Where’s Waldo? We are especially glad Waldo was found, because Waldo Pigeon had both wings amputated at the elbow with such precision that we can only surmise this was an act of torture. Sadly, people with the cruelest of intentions prey upon pigeons’ defenseless, and we have rescued pigeons who have been shot with BB guns, impaled by blow darts, burned with cigarettes. And in Waldo‘s case, subjected to mutilation and left to die. But they didn’t count on the power of Waldo’s courage and people with kind hearts! Because Waldo was found, our rescue was called, and Waldo was saved. His wounds healed quickly, but Waldo was understandably still terrified. Pigeons are highly intelligent, sensitive beings, and they experience emotional and psychological trauma just like we humans do. Waldo spent several months in the care of GLPR volunteer Wren, who spent every day reassuring him that no longer had to be afraid. And gradually, Waldo’s confidence began to return. Instead of fear, we started to see spunk and sass! Such an indescribable joy, seeing Waldo’s personality emerge as he began to express himself again. Understandably, Waldo is still learning to trust, and still on his journey of reassurance. We know the most healing gift of all for Waldo will be the security of a forever home, where he can be reassured every day he is safe and cherished.
