Smokey

Hello, my name is Smokey, and I am an approximately 21-year-old Timneh African Grey. I am a beautiful bird who enjoys quiet moments but also love being a part of the happenings in my foster home. My previous owner was a woman, and I may bond quickly to a female, however I love my foster father and am also fine with children. However, don’t push my buttons. When I want to be left alone, I will always warn you. Socially I like to spend time near my foster family, however I do love to spend time outside in the screened-in lanai eating Chop my foster father prepares for me. I love to say, “Love You” and will start talking throughout the day, mostly my bird gibberish. I need lots of time outside my cage and don’t have any problems with other birds in the house. In addition, my foster parents have cats, and I don’t seem to mind them either. I was on a pure seed diet prior to arriving to my foster parent’s home and my foster father spent a great deal of time converting me to healthy diet. As my doctor said when I first arrived, I was a little overweight, but I am fine now. Currently I eat 75% chop and 25% seed mix in the morning. My foster father says I will need to do this for at least another month and will be happy to give you the recipe that I love. Then I will be eating just chop in the mornings. He leaves Harrisons High Potency pellets in my cage or stand so I can nibble on when I’m hungry and at dinner time I get Avi Cakes and Nutri Berries which I love. My foster father now uses safflower seeds or nuts only as a reward for when I am engaging in desirable behavior, so I aim to please! I don’t like to spend time on your shoulder or lap as this can increase my hormones and I might behave badly. But I love to spend time near my family so I can watch and be part of the flock. I have to keep reminding people I am not a cat and don’t need to be pet. All in all, I am a very easy-going bird and can’t wait for a forever family to take me home!
