My Story

Brave Maeve: Even the strongest of racing pigeons are not always able to complete the competition. Brave Maeve lived up to her name...She Who Rules. Maeve was noted for her stamina and ability to fly long distances. All the pigeons in the coop admired and praised Maeve. The day of the 1000 kilometer race was unbearably hot with a hazy acrid yellow cloud hanging in the air from the wildfires up North. Brave Maeve was worried for herself and all her family flock. " The race must proceed as planned," declared the owner. The truck rumbled toward the beginning point of the race, the gate was released and Brave Maeve flew toward the home loft so many many miles away. Somewhere in between the unforgiving sun and flaxen vapor Maeve became breathless and overwhelmed with thirst. Unable to continue she landed in a backyard… her wings could carry her no further and exhaustion overcame Maeve. Time passed and Maeve lay in the cooling grass until a tiny pair of hands picked her upwards and soothed her aching soul. And so Brave Maeve was rescued by a kind older lady and brought to GLPR. Brave Maeve learned to fly again after much needed rest, and she often wonders what happened to the remainder of her family that fateful day. Maeve yearns for a forever home where she can begin life again in a whole new way, a world away from The Day in the Life of a Racing Pigeon. To all the pigeons out there forced into this cruel sport... we are rooting for your survival.
