My Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Hatch Date: 2016 This is Luna, another Diva in the Rescue and a confirmed 7 year old, female Goffins Cockatoo (DNA sexed) with a long life ahead of her. Luna has seen way too much change in her short seven years of life. She was returned last year, after being adopted from the Rescue six months prior. Luna bonded with her adoptive dad and flew after her adoptive mom to bite her. This would be typical behavior in the wild, in order to threaten someone perceived as competition for your mate, but it's not ideal in the home, so Luna was confined to her cage a lot, and finally surrendered. Luna has repeated this behavior in her foster home. She loves her foster dad, and her foster mom has had to become quite stealthy in order to avoid her aerial attacks. For this reason, Luna would do best in a home where she can be a loyal companion to a single man living alone. We think Luna would be able to thrive in a home where she can be out of her cage for much of the day and where there's only one object of all her affection. A home with frequent visitors would be setting Luna up to fail. In the past year, Luna has begun pulling the feathers around her ears and face, likely a nervous or anxious habit she's developed to calm her nerves from all of the change in her life. She's gotten a clean bill of health from the vets, who say she is a 'typical nervous Goffins'. She grew her feathers back beautifully, with the use of a soft ruffled collar, but her foster parents noticed that she became more depressed from the restriction. For now, they're concentrating on changing up her foraging toys and making sure she has lots of enrichment throughout the day. Luna loves head and face scratches. She steps up on her terms, so it can be helpful that she is target trained, If she is in her cage, as soon as you approach, she will tilt her head for a head scratch. She readily climbs out of her cage when the door is opened and will mostly hang out on top of the cage, but she is a VERY SKILLED at flying. She does not like bird stands, but target training may help that too. She would make an excellent TV buddy for the man of her dreams! Luna is on a healthy pelleted diet and eats some fresh food provided to her for dinner. Luna is small, but she is still a cockatoo, and she clearly got the memo ;>D She can be VERY loud, and screams and screeches to get your attention. She will yell 'Hello' or scream, in an attempt to get you to take her out of her cage stat, so her adopter will need to be ready to wait her out and reward her when she quiets down. She also tweets when you ask her what the birdies say and meows when you ask what the kitty cats say. Her cat impression is SPOT ON!! As she is loud, Luna will only be adopted to a single person living in a single family home. Apartment or condo dwellers need not apply. Her adopter should have large bird experience (preferably cockatoo) and ideally, many hours/day to allow Luna one-on-one time with them--she wants her own human companion in the worst way. Luna is being fostered in Howell, NJ, and will require three in-person visits before adoption; we do not ship our adoptable birds. For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA. As our adoptable birds are living in volunteer homes, we only allow approved adopters to make the required visits. If interested in adopting Luna, please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org and read our adoption policies, and fees and complete an adoption application.
