My Story

** If you are interested in Kalaya, you must submit an adoption application. Instructions are at the end of this bio ** Kalaya is a blue and gold macaw approximately 20 years old. Her current owner has had her for 17 years and is her 3rd home. She was DNA sexed by a vet prior to them getting her. Kalaya does pluck her feathers due to nervousness; her owner has worked with a bird expert regarding this habit but it has not improved. She is still pretty featherless on the underneath side. Her beak grows crooked and needs to be dremeled 3-4 times a year at her vet. Her relinquishing owner writes: “She talks, mumbles, yells, screams & makes messes as do most parrots. She can also be very sweet and playful, but that comes more with time and attention. She does have a huge blood curdling scream that is so loud the neighbors can hear her in the summer. The only other person she likes is my significant other and he has put in a lot of time with her the last year and a half. She is onery and will pinch and break the skin and could break a finger, yet never has. She just doesn't know the strength of that huge beak, however we have been working on gentle for a while and she is getting it. She chews on her cage cover so I just buy blankets at Goodwill when it needs replaced. Some of the things she says and likes to do - hello or hi Kalaya, step up Kalaya, whatever, bird, bird, bird, bad bird, bad girl, umm food, brat, and several others. Touchdown or hup and she lifts her wings like for a goal, she yells shut up at the dogs barking because she has heard it so many times. She has a wonderful infectious laugh and makes some cool silly sounds. She and I make kissing sounds to each other; when she hears a speaker phone ringing she yells “hello!” She likes to mimic sounds and loves playing monkey see, monkey do, bobbing and weaving and giggling. She loves toys, especially shredding bright colored blocks of wood. I buy bird toy parts and have skewers and other things to put them on to put them on. Her store bought food is Zupreem large fruit flavored, Lafeber's nutri berries for macaws and black oil sunflower seeds. Her all-time favorite food is nuts in the shell, but she loves almost everything we eat as well. Meat, eggs, cheese, crackers, fruit, veggies and more. When it gets dark she is ready for bed especially in the winter just like us. Just have to tell her to get in her cage and she climbs in and stays quietly until I uncover her in the morning. I spray her down in the shower once or twice a month and help her with a little preening of the places she can’t get to.” Kalaya’s owner is searching for someone who has the time, love and energy to give to her. She will come with her large cage that is 5' high, 3.5' wide, 2.5' deep and weighs 200 pounds (it rolls.) ** To apply for Kalaya, please download the application from http://www.alaskabirdclub.org/aab_forms.shtml ... fill out, and attach document copy and paste into an email to: [email protected] **
