My Story

** If you are interested in Jak Jak, you must submit an adoption application. Instructions are at the end of this bio ** Meet Jak Jak the green cheek conure! Jak Jak's relinquishing owner writes: “Jak Jak (he also responds to jak) is a pretty sensitive bird. He appears to have vision loss, which shows up as difficulty finding treats and staring at the side of his cage being frustrated that he cannot keep walking. He will walk right over treats unless they are specifically in his food bowl or on a flat surface. He has colorful blocks on the top of his cage where I put his seeds so he can see that they’re there. He is interested in people. He puffs up in excitement and chirps back at you when you say his name and talk to him. He is a pretty vocal guy if he wants something, usually food or somebody to chatter with. He still has a decently sized personal space zone and will walk to the other side of his cage when approached. He eats Zupreem pellets and gets seeds as a treat. He likes sunflower seeds, and he will eat safflower seeds and picks at other seeds in the mix. He does like apples. He will pick at banana chips. He will take maybe bite of a fresh banana and then drop the rest. He loves to dip his food in water before eating, so give him fresh water often. If you approach too quickly or open the door too fast he will hop or fly away. He may fly in circles until he runs out of breath. He does settle down and enjoy your company in his own way.. He does not like to step up. I still have to turn the lights off to get him in my hand. If he is somewhere he should not be or if he is too tired to fly, he will walk into your palm and lay down. He does not balance well on one finger – possibly because one of his nails grows very slowly, seemingly not at all. He can step up but he loses balance when you move your hand. I have tried to step him up onto my shoulder but he runs right into my hair and hides, and is scared to be handled and untangled. He has lived with a parakeet but he did not seem to like him very much. I preened him myself because his head had many pin feathers that he would not let his budgie roommate preen. He may not do well with other birds, he would squawk and bat at the budgie if he got too close to him. Lights go on for him at 6:00 AM and he goes to bed at 6:30 PM. He is entertained when I sing to him or do some amateur beat boxing. He does chew wooden toys sometimes. He ignores plastic toys or bells.” ** To apply for Jak Jak, please download the application from http://www.alaskabirdclub.org/aab_forms.shtml ... fill out, and attach document copy and paste into an email to: [email protected] **
