My Story

Hi there! My name is Gallagher, and I am a Blue and Gold Macaw. I am approximately 47 years old, but I consider myself young at heart. I was surrendered to Florida Parrot Rescue when my family had some unexpected life changes. Since being in my foster home, my foster mom says that I am a good boy but feels that it takes me a little longer to trust other people besides my foster mom but since she has had me, I have worked with her nephew and men can be ok too I found! The secret to my heart is walnuts or almonds in their shell. I like to get on the floor to find my foster mom, but I think it can be fun to chase something that runs, and I will laugh while doing. Foster mom's nephew use to run, and it was fun to chase him! But then one day I got brave enough to not run and so now I step up and even let him and mom give me head scratches. If I am in my cage, I feel safer in there, but we are working on that too. With new people I like to get out on floor first and then I will step up with a nut. I will just step up on foster mom without one now! When asked if I would like to step up, I will lift my foot up to let my foster mom know I am ready to be picked up. I can still be stubborn like anyone and say no with a warning, but I have never bit anyone it’s just importing to listen to my signs. I trust my foster mom and if I do get stubborn and want to stay out, she tells me and shows me a nut and then I will step up! I do love to hang out with foster mom on the Java tree but if I am on my cage I will get off and get on floor to go find her! If I hear her in the other room, I will say Hi! Hi! Hi! And when she leaves, I say bye! I also can say my name and crackers. I think everything mom eats is crackers so I will say it hoping for some. She seems to only eat peppers and nuts though! I do love mix veggies chopped, broccoli zucchini and red and orange peppers are my favorite! I get scared of new people that move fast around me and will put my wings up to say I am big please don’t hurt me and act like I attack whatever is around to show how tough I am, but my foster mom knows that I am a big softy inside just need to be around more people and know they will not hurt me. My foster mom says I am very gentle at play touch. It’s a great way to start with me to get me where you want me. She just shows me an almond and asks me to touch a chopstick where she wants me and I will go anywhere for it! She tells me to be gentle and I know how to touch it with out biting it! I really need someone who is willing to continue with training to help build my confidence and trust. I also need to be adopted by someone who has large bird experience. I used to pluck my belly and my feathers may never grow back, but I think I am beautiful just the way I am. I am a very good eater. I am on a healthy diet of pellets, fruits, and veggies. I also love almonds or walnuts in the shell, and I earn these treats with target training. If I sound like the perfect bird for you, fill out the application at the link below. I can't wait to meet you! Gallagher would love a new toy or treat as he gets settled into his foster home.
