My Story

2 year old Tom (White Broad-breasted Turkey) Experience Level: 3 Aspen grew up at SHARA, joining the flock as a young poult, narrowly escaping processing in just a few short weeks. His breed is a delicate one because humans destroyed them. “Meat birds” are bred to gain massive amounts of weight in just a few short months so that they are big enough to slaughter quickly. It saves the industry money by not having to raise these birds more than eight weeks. Due to this abnormal growth, these turkeys are more susceptible to weight issues (e.g. leg/walking issues, heart attacks) and illness (e.g. they must have good, nutritious feed in order to stay healthy, however, their food also needs to be rationed). Aspen must go to a home where there are no other Toms or roosters.
