My Story

This listing is for our African Greys. All of them have been thoroughly vet checked, including bloodwork. Some are in good feather and others were previously pluckers. All of them are friendly with our volunteers but have different levels of confidence; some may take longer to warm up and trust than others. We have male and female African Greys but we will not adopt opposite genders to the same household. If the potential adopter already has an African Grey, they will only be allowed to adopt another one of the same sex. Adoption fee ranges from $700-$1000, dependent on the specific bird. African Greys can be wonderful, fun, energetic birds to have in your home and family. Unfortunately, because of their beauty and reputation to be "talkers," they are often purchased by families that aren't necessarily educated or experienced enough to deal with their specific needs. A lot of them wind up plucking or even biting their families and then find their way to a rescue when the family can no longer care for them. By the time birds come to CARE, they may have already been rehomed multiple times and/or have suffered emotional trauma. Our responsibility to these Greys (and all other birds in our rescue) is to find them forever homes where they can flourish and live a healthy, happy life. To that end, we will not accept applications for our African Greys from those who have never owned large birds. Applicants with personal African Grey experience will be given precedence as African Greys require families who can meet their specific needs like mental stimulation, foraging opportunities, lots of out of cage play time, and understand that not all Greys are like the talking ones you see on YouTube. Some birds may never feel comfortable talking, but that doesn't make them any less worthy of a loving home. The best way to gain experience is to volunteer! We are always accepting new volunteer applications! If you are interested in adoption, please go to www.centerforanimalrehab.org, read our Adoption Policies, and fill out the Adoption Application. Once your application is approved, we will set up a meet and greet with you/your family. We are located in Waukesha, WI and do not ship. All adopters must live within a 100 mile radius. We do not adopt birds to households that have the opposite gender birds.
